Reseda High School, established in 1955, is located in the Reseda section of the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles, California, United States.

The school is home to the Reseda High School Police Academy Magnet, the Reseda High School Science Magnet and the Reseda High School Law & Public Service Magnet. Reseda High School's program consists of four small learning communities (SLC), the 9th Grade Academy, 10th Grade Academy, Academy of Technology & Health Careers, and the Liberal Arts & Education Academy.

History

Reseda High was the first complete high school to be built after World War II. Reseda opened with complete academic and science buildings, gymnasium, track & field, Industrial shops, including an automotive repair facility. Reseda was the first High School to have a three-color system of navy, Columbia blue, and white. It is one of few high schools in the San Fernando Valley to have a complete auditorium.

Academic programs

Reseda High School programs include a Humanities Academy, Multilingual Teachers Academy, Academic Decathlon program, Navy Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps, Chapter of Health Occupations Students of America, Science Bowl.

Reseda High School is one of the few schools in the San Fernando Valley to have a robotics team.

Sports

Reseda High School fields teams for boys & girls in football, basketball, soccer, baseball, softball, volleyball, tennis, golf, track & field, cross country, water polo, swimming & wrestling. The teams have won CIF Championships in sports including football, basketball, track & field, soccer, volleyball, cross country and tennis. The school has had several successful individual athletes.

Reseda has marching band, cheerleading and dance & drill teams.

Football

The Reseda High School football team won league championships in 1980, 1983, 1984, 1986, 1987, 1993, 2010 and 2011 seasons for three different leagues. The Regents were 2-A CIF champions in 1986 and 3-A champions in 1995.

Reseda's football field is dedicated to former head coach Joel Shaeffer, who died in early January 2013. Schaeffer coached the Regents from 1976 to 2000, in which the team won 6 league titles and 2 CIF championships. The team's current Head Coach, Alonso Arreola took over the team in the 2005 season and won consecutive league Championship titles in the 2010 and 2011 seasons led by Quarterback Kwamhe Davis.

Reseda High School Police Academy Magnet

Reseda High School's Police Academy Magnet (PAM) was founded in 1998 by then football coach Joel Schaeffer.

Reseda High School Science Magnet

The Reseda Science Magnet School attempts to provide students with a strong background in science, math and social responsibility. The program prepares students to be successful at the college level in the fields of medicine, physics, chemistry, engineering, geology and environmental science. Students are expected to have a strong background in mathematics.

Students are offered three choices: a medical option, an engineering option, and a geology/ environmental science option though a majority of the students choose the medical option.(As of 2014 these programs do not exist anymore.)

The Reseda Science Magnet scores the highest on CSTs, SATs, and ACTs in the entire school.

School shooting

On February 22, 1993, 15-year-old Robert Heard shot and killed 17-year-old Michael Shean Ensley in a corridor of Reseda High School. Although police declined to characterize the shooting as gang-related, they did say both boys were involved in tagging.

School in film

  • Reseda was used as the high school in the television series The Shield and in an episode of Commander in Chief, and also several episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
  • Many locations of the campus appeared in the feature film Grosse Pointe Blank.
  • Reseda High was the location for the fictional "Larkspur High School" in the Saturday Morning TV Show "The Secrets of Isis" (1975-77). Andrea Thomas (Isis' secret identity) was a science teacher there.
  • At least a part of an episode of 90210 was filmed there as well as a part of the movie Boogie Nights.
  • In 2007, the campus was used as a location to film a music video for the song "Misery Business" by the American rock band Paramore.
  • In 2008, one of the school's gyms was used to film parts of the season premiere of the hit show, "My Name is Earl".
  • In 2009, another episode of "My Name is Earl" was filmed on the school's campus.
  • November 2009 - January 2010, MTV productions filmed the new series, "The Hard Times of RJ Berger"
  • In 2009 RG Integra Entertainment filmed "The Life of a Street Racer and a Thug" throughout the campus. It starred Rene Gutierrez as the thug street racer.
  • In 2010 the school was used for the setting for the horror film Detention starring David Carradine.
  • March 2010 "The Hard Times of RJ Berger" filmed several scenes for the upcoming premier.
  • June 2010 an episode of "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia" was filmed on the campus.
  • October 2010 - December 2010 "The Hard Times of RJ Berger" filmed the second season to the popular MTV hit.
